TFG Transfracht issues BMW Group with certificate for 100% CO2-free rail transportation

On June 4, 2019, Dr. Bernd Pahnke, Spokesperson of the Board of Managing Directors at TFG Transfracht, presented a carbon footprint certificate at the Mu-nich transport logistics trade fair to Norbert Dierks, who is responsible for BMW Group's sustainability/CO2 management in connection with inbound and non-German supply transportation.

Approved by Germany's TÜV technical inspection association, this certificate sees TFG confirm that BMW Group uses 100% CO2-free rail transportation in the form of TFG's Eco Plus solution. This freight product made it possible for BMW to cut CO2 emissions by 5,154 metric tonnes relative to truck haulage on its Dingolfing, Wackersdorf and Wallersdorf routes during the period from Janu-ary 1 to December 31, 2018. The CO2 figure for road-based transportation would have come to 13,394 metric tonnes. Working together, the two companies achieved an overall reduction in CO2 emissions of 3% on 2017's total.

For over 17 years, TFG Transfracht has been BMW's nominated service pro-vider for seaport hinterland transportation to its plants at Dingolfing, Wack-ersdorf, and, since 2016, Wallersdorf. BMW Group also opted to use TFG's Eco Plus service for all of its siding traffic in 2016, and its container transportation activities have been completely 100% CO2-free since that year.

Dr. Bernd Pahnke says, "We are delighted to have spent the past three years working with BMW Group to make this important contribution to climate protec-tion, something which we plan to continue in the future. As a rail operator, we promote the use of trains for the main leg of transportation activities. Using Eco Plus guarantees the 100% elimination of CO2 emissions when compared with trucking. This sees us lead the way in green logistics."

Norbert Dierks adds: "There is no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' modes of trans-portation – instead, it's a matter of what will get our parts to the right location at the right time. Whenever possible, we want to make sure that this is done with the lowest emissions during inbound transportation and car distribution activities."
