Berlin/Großbeeren combined traffic terminal Berlin is booming – DUSS and Transfracht expanding capacity

06.10.2006 - (Berlin/Frankfurt a. M.) The German economic upturn in combined traffic is also evident in eastern Germany. As a result of the increased volume of traffic, capacities had to be expanded appropriately. The expansion of the Berlin/Großbeeren trans-shipment depot is now complete and therefore offers new growth potential, particularly for TFG Transfracht International seaport-hinterland traffic. The terminal, which is mainly served by AlbatrosExpress, is now one of the most modern trans-shipment depots for combined traffic in Germany and in the Berlin and Brandenburg region. In the current rankings of German freight traffic centres Großbeeren developed by IPG mbH was ranked third, despite recently showing the fastest pace of development among all German freight traffic centres.

In a construction phase of just seven months, the unloading module was expanded and the sidings, crane tracks and the lanes, loading and unloading lanes were all extended. The development project was completed whilst trans-shipments continued as normal. On completion of the development project, four trains, two 700 metres long and two 350 metres long, could be simultaneously loaded or unloaded. In addition, the storage capacity was doubled to 600 TEU and an additional high-performance gantry crane with a load of up to 41 tonnes was installed. Because the trend towards using containers is slowing, containers, swap bodies and craneable semi-trailers with a total capacity of around 100,000 loading units can be trans-shipped per year at Berlin/Großbeeren. This almost doubles the previous trans-shipping capacity. A dangerous goods leakage area is now also available.

By doubling the trans-shipment performance, DUSS supplies rail transport companies and operators with fast and significantly improved access to combined traffic services. Thanks to the modular construction concept, future expansions to cope with increasing demand, or even a second trans-shipment module, are no problem. The terminal operator is Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene - Straße DUSS mbH.

TFG runs six connections a week via the Berlin/Großbeeren AlbatrosExpress terminal – from Monday to Friday as well as one weekend departure – to the German North Sea ports, meaning a high-capacity range of transportation services is available to seaport-hinterland traffic. The modifications at Großbeeren have made processing for TFG’s premium product even more efficient. The additional crane and the extension of the crane siding means that HGVs can be loaded and unloaded even faster. The current timetable may be viewed at www.transfracht.de/E-Services/Timetables at any time.

With the expansion of the terminal, Deutsche Bahn, DUSS and the local freight traffic centre have achieved an important contribution to linking road and rail transport in Großbeeren and can therefore respond to the increased demand for higher trans-shipment capacities. Car manufacturers and their suppliers, as well as the Brandenburg timber industry, are key contributors to the rise in workload.
